Do Not Abolish the Suburbs

The Biden-Sanders Plan of Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH), is supported by my opponent Madeleine Dean. The deceptively titled act will not affirmatively further fair housing. It will effectively abolish the suburbs.

AFFH will federalize local control of our communities. It will, in fact, take away local control from local citizens and place it in the hands of bureaucrats in Washington, D.C. These bureaucrats will then determine who should live where and what our communities should look like.

This is how it will work:

  • If your county or township receives any funding through the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, they must affirm they will do their part in making sure their community’s demography (e.g., diversity, race, income, education, etc.) is reflective of the broader community. Sounds fair enough. Right?
  • The broader community here, however, would extend beyond the borders of the township or county to also include the greater metropolitan area. For example, Lower Merion Township in Montgomery County, PA, would be forced to expand its definition of its community to also include the Greater Philadelphia metropolitan area.
  • So, Lower Merion would agree to make its community look more like the Greater Philadelphia area.
  • If you take just $1 from CDBG, you will be forced to take this pledge.
  • As of July 2020, Montgomery County, PA had received $3.3 million in CDBG funding. Lower Merion had received roughly $1.0 million, while Abington, PA had received approximately $800,000. During this same time period, Philadelphia had received over $44.0 million of funds from CDBG.
  • Going back to our original example, Lower Merion having received roughly $1.0 million in funds from CDBG would now be obligated under the Biden-Sanders-Dean plan to use taxpayer dollars to make Lower Merion level of diversity, education and other socioeconomic strata better mirror the Greater Philadelphia area.
  • This will include, but is not limited to, rezoning single-family housing areas to include building high-density-low income apartments and transplanting people who live in urban areas out to suburbs that will effectively morph into helpless satellites of the cities they surround.

The hammer these activist politicians and bureaucrats will use is the courts to force communities to live up to their obligation and the Corey Booker Surface Transportation Block Grants that will withhold Federal funds (our taxpayer dollars) if we do not redesign our communities the way they think they should look. They have proposed a non-workable utopian vision that they want to impose on us. Their ultimate goal is to end the very nature of suburban life.

I believe that the unique and diverse character of our communities should be maintained and that any changes be determined by the citizens who live there. When I get to Congress, I will listen to my constituents and work closely with local elected officials to get our Federal money into the communities where they want them to go.
